There are two basic types of mobile design websites. Standalone is a site that is completely separate from the desktop site and has it's own domain. The other type, and the one that the web design community has been gravitating toward, is called responsive design. Responsive design has code in the main desktop site that detects what kind of device that the visitor is on, then serves up a version that displays best on that device. They each have their pros and cons, but overall, responsive is probably the better choice. It is such when any changes are made to images, test, or design, those changes instantly apply to both sites. With standalone, you have to make changes in both places individually.
